Notifications and alerts
FindLove gets in touch in three ways: a notification on your phone when someone writes to you, alerts in your member area, and a small number of emails, including an optional weekly summary. This guide explains what each one says, when it's sent, and how to switch it off.
Only new messages
Your phone is notified when someone writes to you, about a minute later. Interest, matches and friend requests wait for you in the app.
Private by default
A notification just says you have a new message. Names and message text only appear if you turn on previews.
You choose, everywhere
Switch messages off for your account or your profile, and turn notifications on or off for each device.
What sends a notification
Notifications come from the FindLove app for Android and iPhone. The website doesn't send browser notifications.
New messages, and nothing else
Your phone is notified when another member writes to you. Expressions of interest, new matches and friend requests don't send notifications. Your matches and incoming friend requests are counted beside Matches and Friends when you next open FindLove.
One notification for a burst of messages
We wait 60 seconds before notifying you. If several messages arrive in a conversation in that time, you get one notification that counts them.
Nothing for messages you've already read
If you read the conversation before the wait is over, for example because it's already open on your screen, no notification is sent.
Not from people you've blocked
Messages from a member you've blocked, or who has blocked you, never notify you. Neither do messages from profiles our team has removed.
Archiving doesn't mute
Archiving a conversation tidies it out of your inbox. If the other person writes again, it comes back to your inbox and you're notified as usual. To stop hearing from someone, block them.
From a new message to your lock screen.
Every notification goes through the same few steps. The wait and the second check are there so you aren't interrupted for something you've already seen.
Because of the wait, a notification usually arrives about a minute after the message.
-
Step 1
A member writes to you
Their message reaches your conversation straight away, whether or not you're notified.
-
Step 2
We wait a minute
We hold the notification for 60 seconds, so a few quick messages become one notification.
-
Step 3
We check again
Before sending, we check that you still want message notifications for your account and for that profile, that you haven't read the messages yet, and that neither of you has blocked the other.
-
Step 4
Every signed-in device is notified
Each phone or tablet where you're signed in and have turned notifications on gets the same notification. Messages are only announced once, so you won't be told about the same message twice.
-
Step 5
Tap to open the conversation
Tapping the notification opens that conversation in the app.
What your lock screen shows
Notifications can be seen by anyone who glances at your phone, so they are private unless you choose otherwise.
Previews off, which is the default
The notification says "New message on FindLove", or "3 new messages on FindLove" when there are several. It doesn't name the sender or show what they wrote.
Previews on
The notification shows the sender's display name, or "A FindLove member" if they haven't set one, and their latest message, cut short after 150 characters.
Nothing else travels with it
Behind the scenes a notification only carries what the app needs to open the right conversation. With previews off, no name or message text is sent to your phone at all.
Every switch, and where it starts
You'll find these in the app under Profile → Notification settings, and on the website under Account settings → Notifications. Apart from the device switch, both places change the same settings.
Turning notifications on, and signing out
Notifications belong to the device you're signed in on. Each phone or tablet has to be switched on by you, and stops when it's signed out.
The app asks only when it's useful
FindLove doesn't ask for permission when you first open the app. Once you have a conversation, your Messages inbox offers "Know when someone writes". Your phone asks for permission only after you tap Turn on.
Your phone's settings come first
If you block FindLove notifications in your phone's settings, the app stops this device receiving them. Allow them again and they resume.
Signing out stops them
When you sign out of the app, that device stops receiving your notifications. If someone else signs in on it, they have to turn notifications on for themselves.
Sign out a device you no longer have
On the website, Account settings → Security lists your app devices under App and API devices. Signing one out, or choosing Sign out all devices, stops notifications to it straight away.
Changing your password signs out the app
Changing or resetting your password signs out every device using the app, so notifications stop until you sign in again and turn them back on.
Alerts
Alerts are notes about your account that wait for you under Alerts in the member area. The number beside Alerts shows how many you haven't read.
What creates an alert
Alerts are created for your verifications: when our team asks you to verify something, and when a verification is approved, rejected or revoked. Each alert names the request and, when a verification is rejected or revoked, gives the reason.
Reading an alert
Opening an alert marks it as read. Use Mark all as read to clear the count in one go. Read alerts stay on the list, so you can look back at them later.
One list for your whole account
Alerts belong to your account, so you see the same alerts on each signed-in device.
The emails we send you
Email is kept for your account, its safety and one optional weekly summary. Everything else stays in the app and the member area.
Signing up and signing in
- Confirmation instructions when you register, with a link to confirm your email address. You can ask for them again if the first one doesn't arrive.
- A welcome email once your account is confirmed, with the next steps for your profile.
- A link to reset your password, only when you ask for one.
- A link to confirm a new email address, sent to the new address when you change it.
Your verification requests
- When our team asks you to verify your identity or another detail.
- When a verification is approved, rejected or revoked. Each email matches an alert in your member area.
Replies from our team
- When you write to us through Contact us, our reply comes by email to the address you gave.
Your week on FindLove
- On Sunday morning in your time zone, how many conversations have unread messages, how many friend requests are waiting and how many members viewed your profile in the past week.
- It never includes other members' names, photos or message text, and isn't sent when there's nothing new.
- It's on unless you turn it off: switch off Weekly summary in Notification settings, or use the link at the bottom of any summary.
What we don't email you about
- A separate email for each message, interest, match or friend request. Those reach you in the app and the member area. The weekly summary only counts unread conversations, waiting friend requests and profile views.
- Newsletters or promotions. FindLove doesn't send them.
Dates, times and quiet hours
Times in your own time zone
FindLove shows dates and times, such as when an alert or a message arrived, in the time zone you choose under Account settings → Time Zone. It starts as Asia/Colombo (UTC+05:30), and if your browser reports a different one when you sign in, we offer it as a shortcut.
No quiet hours
Your time zone doesn't hold notifications back: a message notifies you whenever it arrives. To keep nights quiet, use your phone's Do Not Disturb or focus settings.
Choose what reaches you.
Your notification settings apply on every device you're signed in on, and you can change them at any time.
